SUMMARY:Berks Alliance Community Forum: The Work of United Way and Community Foundations
DESCRIPTION:The Work of United Way and Community Foundations\n\n \n\nCommunity foundations and United Way affiliates are important sources of local philanthropic capital. Raising funds and generally distributing grants in a defined geographic place\, they can represent the largest grantmaking institutions in a region. Yet as critical as these institutions are in supporting the work of nonprofits and addressing community needs\, extensive data on their grantmaking activity have been lacking. \n\n\n\nIn a new report\, coauthors from the Federal Reserve Banks of Philadelphia and Atlanta\, Indiana University\, and Ohio State University analyze grant-level data from a sample of 1\,650 community foundations and United Ways representing over $20 billion in grants made between 2012 and 2016. This presentation will compare and contrast regional and statewide grantmaking patterns with national findings.\n\n\n\nKeith Wardrip\, Community Development Research Director at the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank who is a co-author of the report\, will share the findings. Tammy White\, President of the United Way of Berks County\, and Kevin Murphy\, President of the Berks County Community Foundation\, will highlight the work their organizations do for our region.
