In June 2022, Steve Essig, 3rd generation owner of Essig Plumbing & Heating, shared his family business story ups and the downs, all while discussing the 7 Principles of a Healthy [Family] Business. These 7 principles are what has created his success, and stability, in his family business. The FBA 2023 Program will be diving deeper into each Principle.

Within Steve Essig’s presentation of "7 Principles of a Healthy Family Business," he spoke of importance of understanding your true role in the [family] business. You might wear multiple hats: family member, employee, shareholder, or more, and it is vital for each to understand how to operate under each title. By understanding the role of each and how they come together, it will create a system of accountability within the business for its success for now and the future. This expert panel will offer situational advice on how to proactively (or reactively) start the conversation and action of setting clarity of roles.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS
Scott Burky joined The High Center on Jan. 19, 2021 as a Managing Director – New Markets leading the expansion of the Center into the Lehigh Valley and Berks County. Burky has more than 25 years of experience in results-driven leadership, strategic planning, organizational & leadership development and innovative problem solving for diverse industries including banking, telecom and energy. He worked as Chief Operations Officer for a family-owned energy company, Rhoads Energy, in central Pennsylvania for seven years. During that time, the company completed six acquisitions of other family-owned and privately-held heating oil, propane and HVAC companies and launched several new product lines. Burky’s diverse experiences in banking, communications and energy allow him to bring a unique perspective to his work with the High Center. During his tenure with Rhoads Energy, he participated in a Key Executive Peer Group with the High Center and then returned as a facilitator of both CEO and Key Executive Peer Groups for the Center. As a developer, organizer, and problem solver, he enjoys the dynamic nature of family-business and the unique challenges owners and leadership teams face as they grow their companies.
Sally Derstine is President and Senior Family Business Advisor at the Delaware Valley Family Business Center (DVFBC). Like her team of advisors, Sally grew up in a family business which gives her firsthand experience into the joys and challenges of multi-generational family businesses. For more than 30 years, she has walked alongside hundreds of enterprising families as they navigate the natural emotional and strategic complexities and transitions. Using the 5 MOUNTAIN® Process she developed a decade ago, Derstine provides a framework from which to teach principles and practices. Through structured crucial conversations, Sally guides families in building capacity and communicating within and between their 5 MOUNTAIN® teams and structures such as energizing Family Councils and aligned Shareholder Teams. In 1992, she was the driving force in launching the Family Business Learning Community, one of the earliest and perhaps only non-university based Forum featuring and connecting successful enterprising families and thought leaders. Sally leads the DVFBC Advisory Team, as well as provides oversight of and input to their Peer Groups for Presidents, Rising Generation, and Women. Most recently, Sally founded and chairs their Family Governance Peer Group.
Donald Schalk is a Professional Specialist in the Business Department of Alvernia University and Director of the MBA Program. In addition, he is the Director of the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership and works with regional business firms in the areas of professional development and corporate education, focusing on leadership and strategic management. Prior to his current role, Schalk was a strategically astute, multidimensional business builder and leader who drove growth and profitability within publicly and privately held energy, agriculture, retail, consumer products, service and wholesale industries. He served as President and CEO of Agway Retail Services, Richland Partners LLC, Energy United Propane and President of C.H. Briggs Company prior to retiring to pursue a goal of teaching.
