Introducing the Schuylkill River Greenway!
The Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area has been designated as both a state and a national Heritage Area, recognizing the national natural, cultural, historic and recreational value of the region. The Heritage Area designation celebrates the region as one of America’s most significant cultural and historic areas. The mission of the Greenways is to connect the communities to the Schuylkill River and the Schuylkill River Trail.
The Schuylkill River Trail will ultimately extend 120 miles from Schuylkill County to Philadelphia. The river itself flows over 137 miles. Both offer recreational opportunities along the trails, connecting communities and important historic sites. In addition to connecting people to the river and trail, Schuylkill River Greenways also works to conserve and protect the watershed that provides drinking water to over 1.5 million people along the river corridor.
This Spotlight will focus on the work that the Greenways is doing and is planning to do in Berks County. Learn what’s next for this valuable community asset.
