Spotlight on Understanding Local Government in Berks County
Did you know that:
- There are 67 counties in Pennsylvania.
- There are 2,560 municipalities in Pennsylvania, including Cities, Boroughs, Townships and 1 town.
- And just to make it more confusing, there are four classes of cities and two classes of townships.
And did you know that:
- There is 1 city in Berks County, the City of Reading, which was founded in 1748.
- There are 28 boroughs and 44 townships.
- That means that in addition to the county, there are 72 municipal governments in Berks County.
- Hamburg is the oldest borough in Berks founded in 1798. New Morgan is both the newest and the smallest found in 1987 with a population of 54. Wyomissing is the largest borough with a population of 11,114.
- Spring Township is the largest township with a population of 27,119. Robeson is the largest in terms of size at 34.1 acres. And Alsace is the oldest, having been incorporated in 1745.

Join us for our Community Forum on Understanding Local Government in Berks County. Paul Janssen, the Director of the Center for Excellence in Local Government will lead a panel of local government leaders who will explain the roles and services of local government in Berks County.
How unique is Pennsylvania? How did we get these different types of municipalities? How significant is the geographic size or population to the type of municipality? How are new municipalities formed? Is consolidation an option or a challenge? Do municipalities collaborate and share resources?
